2009: The Year In Review

The numbers are frightening: 33 million people living with HIV/AIDS, 11 million AIDS orphans, 2.7 persons newly infected annually, 2 million annual deaths to AIDS-related complications. But with your help, we put up some impressive numbers in 2009 to build awareness and provide support for programs that prevent transmission, provide care services, develop vaccines and influence public policy. Here's a brief summary of what you have made possible:

  • Donna Allen60,000 people heard our message of hope at the 16th Annual S.F. Giants' Until There's A Cure Night and the WNBA Minnesota Lynx and Washington Mystics games. UTAC reached thousands more through participation in a nationwide awareness campaign co-sponsored by Bloomingdales and amfAR. Other noteworthy events include a Poker Tournament in Palm Springs, the San Jose AIDS Walk, World AIDS Day Bike Rides, a Woodside Bike Ride and fundraisers with Bitter Fruit and Barterra Winery.
  • We continued to get the word out through our public service advertising initiative. Eighteen luminaries from the sports and entertainment field joined our ranks in 2009 including Nate Berkus (interior designer), Joe Manganiello (actor), Bengie Molina (SF Giants), Emeka Okafor (New Orleans Hornets), Michael Phelps (Olympic gold medalist) and Michelle Williams (recording artist).
  • First Ladies of AfricaUntil There's A Cure Foundation remains an esteemed colleague for AIDS-oriented symposiums and gatherings. We served as an organizing partner for the inaugural Health Summit of the First Ladies of Africa. We participated in the annual conferences for the US Fund for UNICEF, Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA), the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) and the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC). We are active members of FCAA, the International AIDS Society (IAS) and the Northern California Grantmakers Association (NCGA).
  • We garnered recognition from Windy City Black Pride, PrideIndex.com, the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and the Mission Neighborhood Health Crisis for our years of service.

All of this work happens in direct response to your continued support for the Until There's A Cure product line. In 2009, we introduced 14 new products and sold in excess of 13,000 units through our nationwide partner network, our on-line store and special events. Each bracelet, pin, sweatshirt, sweatpants, T-shirt, key chain, calendar and cookbook creates the opportunity to spread the word about AIDS and add to the wellspring of support.

I offer a heartfelt THANK YOU for all you do to help us put an end to this insidious disease. Together, we can make a difference.

Sincerely,

Nora Hanna
