A Night at the Ballpark Benefits Bay Area AIDS Charities

Bright lights at AT&T Park. Ballpark franks. Roaring crowds. What could be better than the 16th Annual "Until There’s A Cure Night" hosted by the San Francisco Giants? Answer: A thrilling sporting adventure that raises thousand of dollars to benefit Bay Area AIDS charities. In keeping with the theme for this year’s game program – Health, Optimism, Prevention, and Education (HOPE) – three local AIDS charities representing a full range of prevention, treatment, and research will be this year’s grant recipients.

Mission Neighborhood Health CenterEstablished in 1967, the Mission Neighborhood Health Center (MNHC) is a community health center that provides primary medical care to the Latino population of the Mission District of San Francisco. Clinica Esperanza (The Hope Clinic) opened in 1989 to serve uninsured HIV+ Latino immigrants who live at or below the poverty line. This community carries a high disease burden layered atop socioeconomic factors that are barriers to HIV care – poverty, stigma, low literacy, trauma, and substance abuse. The Clinic provides a safe, culturally-conditioned environment for treatment with hours that accommodate patients’ professional obligations. Clinica Esperanza also engages in prevention education, outreach to day laborers, HIV testing, case management, mental health and substance abuse services, peer advocacy, and other support services.

Children's Hospital and Research Center OaklandThe Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland (CHRCO) is a comprehensive non-profit regional pediatric medical center established in 1912. Ninety percent of its population is Medi-Cal eligible and low-income. CHRCO Pediatric HIV/AIDS Program (PHAP) provides HIV medical care, psychosocial case management, and support services to children infected with HIV under the age of 21. They also follow children with perinatal exposure to HIV through age 18 months for repeat testing and prophylaxis treatment to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission. Because medication adherence is critical in the management of this chronic disease, the grant will support patient education and the provision of medication reminder devices.

University of California San FranciscoThe UCSF AIDS Policy Research Center (APRC) bridges the gap in evidence-based information between those conducting research in HIV prevention, care, and vaccine development, and those positioned to make policy decisions. They highlight prejudice and bias in policies to assist traditionally underserved populations (e.g., people of color, people living in poverty, and sexual minorities) by providing research-based analyses of current HIV policy issues and the impact of HIV policy options. This grant provides funding for conferences to foster informed collaboration among public health department officials, leaders from the State Office of AIDS, and others positioned to set policy to address the HIV epidemic in California.

The Giants Community Fund and Until There’s A Cure Foundation salutes the achievements and commitment of these fine organizations.
